Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Franklin, TN
Originally developed by the ancient Samurai warriors, Jiu-Jitsu was created and practiced as a part of their martial lifestyle. It was the empty-handed style of fighting that accompanied their swordsmanship, armor-crafting, and other skills of war. For hundreds of years, the Samurai practiced this archaic style of Jiu-Jitsu.
As the Samurai culture began to slip away during Japan's modernization in the 19th century, a man named Jiguro Kano replaced the outdated elements of armor, weapons-fighting, etc, and placed the emphasis on throws, pins, and submission holds.
The modern sport of Judo was thereby born in 1882.
In the 1920's a traveling judo fighter named Mitsuyo Maeda spread the art to Brazil, teaching the sons of a Brazilian family named the Gracies.
Two of these sons, Helio & Carlos Gracie, went on to highly adapt the teachings of judo to focus on ground-fighting specifically. After many years of training, they began calling their fighting style "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu".
The Gracies proliferated this sport to their many children, all of whom trained and competed in Brazil extensively over the decades of 1940s-1980s.
By the 1980s, members of the Gracie family were living in the USA, and wanted to show the world the unique style of fighting that had been developed in Brazil.
In partnership with a movie director, the Gracie family hosted a martial arts tournament to be live-streamed around the world.
They built an octagon, invited talented fighters from each discipline (boxing, karate, wrestling, etc), and the UFC was born.
In 1993, at the very first UFC 1, there were no weight classes, no gloves required, and no holds barred. In this savage ruleset, Royce Gracie (Helio Gracie's youngest son) easily dominated fighters of every discipline by taking them to the ground and defeating them with submission holds.
Following this landmark event, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu exploded onto the world scene, and became widely practiced around the globe.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that focuses on ground fighting and grappling. Unlike other martial arts that emphasize striking and kicking, BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger opponent using leverage and proper techniques.

Clay and the crew at Triangle welcomed me very well when I was visiting from out of town and wanted to train a few times during my stay. Clay is a great instructor and really helped me refine some fundamental skills that needed more work. The gym is clean, organized and located in the middle of downtown. I highly recommend Triangle Academy for all skill levels and I look forward to training here again on my next visit!

I’ve been going to triangle Academy for about two months now and I love it! The sport itself is a lot of fun and the coaches here have created a culture that makes it even more awesome! I can say every time I go I get a really good workout like no other! The team there is really good about keeping it extremely clean which is a huge plus! I was invited by a friend who goes there with his children and was told that this place, if you’re into competing, creates champions and from the training alone I can say I see that first hand! I would recommend this place to everyone and have been hooked ever since!

Triangle Academy is fantastic. We have been there almost 3 years. The growth we have seen in our daughters is amazing. The coaches relate to the kids so well. They teach so much more than martial arts. Nutrution, eye contact, a proper hand shake, respect, self control, and so many more life skills. Their anti-bullying program teaches the kids about using their voice, confident body language and using physical defense as a last resort. Your family will love Clay and his team!

Triangle has been an awesome place to train and develop technique in Jiu Jitsu and get in shape. Outside of the training, the faculty and staff are always helpful, intelligent, and beyond kind/welcoming.Clay (owner) not only teaches classes/technique, but trains with individuals that come in during the sparring secession to give hands on experience with a black belt competitor. He is genuine with his conversation and does the small things of asking about your work/family or seeing what he can do to help. He builds up people in his gym daily and never breaks anyone down that may not be a certain level of skill. The rest of the staff/coaches (and for that matter, other gym members) are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Nothing about walking into the gym felt awkward after I was there for 2 minutes as people come up and conversate with you to make you feel as welcome as possible. The gym offers a wide variety of training times and (even thought there are 3-4 classes a day) is always incredibly clean. In 6 months of training I have never walked into a class that the gym was not 100% spotless and ready.Would highly recommend this gym to anyone interested in Jiu Jitsu, wanting to get into better shape, learn a new discipline, or become part of an awesome community.

Amazing gym! Coach Clay has built a fantastic team and a welcoming environment for everyone. We have both of our boys on his classes.

As a family that didn’t grow up with any martial arts, it was a little challenging to find a gym that not only would instill the right behavior in our kids, but also do it in a way that wasn’t intimidating. His entire team takes a low ego, but high confidence approach to teaching. Even better, the parents are also extremely supportive of new families and each others kids.

I cannot recommend Coach Clay’s Triangle Academy strongly enough.

Been training here for over 2 years now and this gym has been like a blessing to me. Clay and the staff are incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. They work diligently to get the best out of each and every student. Clay is an elite leader with elite work ethic and it rubs off on everybody in the room.

The gym is immaculate and well taken care of and the showers in the locker rooms are a life saver! If I could give triangle academy a million stars I would because it has genuinely improved my quality of life. It’s given me more confidence, improved my physical health, and given me new friendships that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. It truly is the best environment to improve yourself.

I am a black belt. I have been training for 13 years all around the world … I have NEVER trained in a room harder than this.

I love the culture, the emphasis on a competitive mindset, the “never give up” attitude that permeates even the newest athletes in the room.

In all my time training, I’ve never been around a coach who leads from the front more than Clay Mayfield.

Train here - you’ll be glad you did

Austin Orandy
NoGi Pans & World Champion

I started at Triangle after my post doctoral studies and packing on a few pounds, and was looking to get back into some form of grappling. Fortunately, I came across Triangle and was hooked immediately.

The couching is phenomenal and every time I step into the gym I learn something new. I have had the most experience with coach Clay and Zach, both of which give great instruction and very welcoming to questions. It's also worth mentioning the overall team environment at Triangle is overwhelming positive were everyone is looking to improve each other and themselves.

Would highly recommend joining if you're looking for solid training. Additionally, if you're interested in competing there are options for one to do so with great team support.

I came to Triangle Academy on vacation looking for good hard training and I certainly found it! Clay’s instruction is excellent, he’s attentive to his student’s questions and needs, and he explains concepts well. I was pushed hard and was able to train with several different females in the process, which is an added perk since it can be hard to find females to train with at some gyms. I felt welcomed and right at home. I’ll definitely be back if I find myself in the Franklin area again!
